Barbara Bass took the oath of office for mayor during a 9 a.m. special meeting of the Tyler City Council today.
Mayor Joey Seeber administered the oath as his final act as mayor. The swearing-in ceremony was the only item on the meeting agenda.
“We have one thing on the agenda today, and that’s to open a new chapter in the city’s future,” Seeber said, after calling the meeting to order.
The mayor administered oaths of office to Councilmen Donald Sanders and Chris Simons, who ran unopposed in the city election. Councilman Charles Alworth, who faced challenger Larry Meckley in the May 10 election, was out of town Wednesday morning. His oath of office will be administered at the May 28 City Council meeting.
Ms. Bass took the oath of office last, using a family Bible which her husband held throughout the ceremony.
“It’s quite a testimony, Barbara, to the support you have,” Seeber said about the number of people crowding the Council Chambers. “This is an exciting day for you and an exciting day for the city. I couldn’t be more pleased.”
After being sworn in, Ms. Bass took the seat at the head of the dais.
“I’m delighted to be in this chair, following the great leadership from such great mayors for many, many years,” she said. “We look forward to the future of Tyler. We’ve got a fabulous future ahead of us.”
