Newcomers Club of Tyler To Meet At First Christian Church
The Newcomers Club of Tyler is scheduled to meet Friday at the First Christian Church Family Life Center, 4202 S. Broadway Ave., Tyler, club spokesperson Iris Mayer said.
Gillian Sheridan, KLTV-Channel 7 news anchor, will be guest speaker. Social and games begin at 9:30 a.m. with lunch at noon, followed by the program. Lunch cost is $10. Reservations are required, and may be made by calling Judy Bayless at 903-533-8773 before noon on Wednesday.
Mrs. Sheridan was born in Yorkshire, England, and immigrated to the U.S. when she was 2 years old. She was naturalized and became an American citizen when she was 12 years old.
After growing up in Minnesota, Mrs. Sheridan attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., where she earned a bachelor's degree, double majoring in journalism and telecommunications.
Her career as a television news anchor has spanned 18 years, including on-air positions in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Texas.
Mrs. Sheridan has won numerous awards including 2006 Emmy for "Best Human Interest-Series," "2005 Emmy for "Outstanding Evening Newscast," "Best Hard News Story," "Best Spot News Story," "Best Feature Length Documentary," "Best Mini-Documentary/Series" and "Best Feature Story."
The club welcomes those who are new to the Tyler area or have lived in Tyler for less than two years, Mrs. Mayer said.
In 2002 she was awarded "Best Anchor": by the Texas Associated Press. In addition
to all of the above awards, Gillian has been honored several times as "Best
Newscaster" in a poll of East Texas viewers, most recently in 2006.
Recently she received awards for her "Gift of Love" series from the Region IV
Child Welfare Board and the Tyler Ministerial Alliance. She was also named
2004 "Public Citizen of the Year" by the NASW Northeast Texas unit and
2006 "Tyler Woman of Distinction". Gillian's weekly feature, "Gift of Love"
has been instrumental in finding permanent homes for dozens of East Texas foster
children. She is very passionate about helping foster children and doing what she
can to make sure they have a bright future. You see her "Gift of Love" every
Wednesday night at 10 pm on KLTV 7 News.

Salvation Army of Tyler, American Cancer Society, American Heat Association,
American Diabetes Association, Tyler Junior College, Expanding Your Horizons

When Gillian isn't giving of her time, she's spending it with her husband James.
