Juried Student Show Award Winners
Art students at The University of Texas at Tyler were recently recognized for their work and two special awards were given for the 2008 UT Tyler Meadows Gallery Juried Student Exhibition, Ray Sikes, Meadows Gallery coordinator, announced.

The annual student exhibition showcases the best work by art students from the academic year. Each student submitted up to three two- or three-dimensional pieces that were juried by faculty within the Department of Art and Art History.

In addition to a top-prize cash award, Michael Stephen of Tyler received the Christopher Lyon Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Named in honor of the late Christopher Lyon, former UT Tyler art faculty, the scholarship is awarded to a promising art student chosen by a faculty selection committee from the department.

Jessica Riggs of Gladewater received the Dean’s Purchase Award for her piece titled “Kate.” Dr. Alisa White, College of Arts and Sciences dean, chose one work from the exhibition to be purchased and hung in the college’s permanent collection.

Student cash-prize winners and their art pieces were: Michael Stephen of Tyler for “Up Up and Away,” Jason Tanner Young of Corsicana for “Untitled,” Tracey O’Daniel of Tyler for “Intrepid Rumination,” Abby Hicks of Tyler for “One” and Greg Durant of Jacksonville for “Speak Low.”

Other award winners recognized were: Julie Herrera of Tyler for “Brother Sister,” Kristen Henton of Whitehouse for “Unity,” Mary Celeste Goins of Tyler for “Hungry,” Daise Hoitsma of Tyler for “Me Needs a Muzzle for His Sheep, Keep Moving Raskolnikov, Sometimes it Does Fit” and John Bradley of Tyler for “Heavy Load #1.”

This year’s exhibition will continue at the gallery through Aug 1. The public is invited to see the display. The Meadows Gallery is located in the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
