Annual Essay Contest Winners Announced

The winners of the fifth Annual “Why My Mom is Best” Essay Contest were announced recently at the Discovery Science Place.

An essay contest for kids in Kindergarten through fifth grade, more than 200 children entered the contest to tell why their Mom (or Dad) was special to them. The award winners and their grade categories were:

  • Kindergarten and First Grade: Anna Davis, K — Stepping Stone

  • Second and Third Grade: Matthew Spellman, 2nd grade — Caldwell Elementary

  • Fourth and Fifth Grade: Julia Batis, 4th grade — Bell Elementary

  • Grand Prize Winner: Bethany Ward, Fifth Grade — Home Schooled

  • The annual essay contest is co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A and Discovery Science Place. Each winner received a prize basket from Chick-fil-A and Discovery Science Place with the Grand Prize Winner receiving a giant Chick-fil-A Cow plush and an Annual Membership to Discovery Science Place for their family.

    “This essay contest helps to develop writing skills and encourages self expression,” commented Michael Shanklin, Executive Director of Discovery Science Place. “We recognize the challenges that parents face in raising their families and want to help children express their gratitude in a manner that is meaningful to both the parent and the child. We were very pleased with the quality of the entries we received this year.”

  • “She brushes my hair and makes me cute.” — Rachel, Kindergarten

  • “I remember when I was in daycare I wrote my mom a love note...and took it home to her. She burst out into tears and gave me the biggest hug she ever gave me.” —
