Tyler Junior College Netters Capture Three National Tennis Titles
PLANO — With Tyler Junior College out of contention for a team title, the Apaches focused on individual championships Friday at the NJCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Tournament.

The Apaches went 3-for-5 in flight finals.

Clay Cypert, a transfer from Cowley College in Kansas, won the flight 6 title over Laredo’s Oliver Smith, 6-2, 6-0.

Cypert, the No. 1 seed and TJC’s only sophomore, won all four of his national tournament matches in straight sets.

Cypert was also triumphant in doubles as he teamed with Thibaud Aime to win Flight 3. They defeated Andrew Carter and Aaron Goode of Seminole State (Okla.), 6-2, 6-3.

The Apaches won Flight 2 doubles by default. Zack Goldsmith and J.J. Haley won the first set, 6-4, over Laredo’s Maxime Moreau and Jose Carlos Tolentino. Laredo then defaulted with an injury.

Laredo, which won the national team championship, took wins over the Apaches at Flight 2 singles and Flight 1 doubles.

Aime fell to No. 1 seed Francisco Segura, 6-4, 7-6.

In doubles, second-seeded Dominic McLuskey and Roman Petrunin lost to No. 1 seed Moacir Santos and Segura, 7-5, 6-4.

Laredo finished with 47 points. The Apaches were second with 41 points. Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) was third with 33, followed by Vincennes (Ind.) with 32. Seminole State (Okla.) and Johnson County (Kan.) tied for fifth with 25 points.

Host Collin College was eighth with 21 points.
