All-East Texas Girls Soccer Team
Rachel Saunders

Most Valuable Player: Rachel Saunders, All Saints
All Saints forward Rachel Saunders is similar to an ATM machine, always delivering the goods when prompted. The junior led the Lady Trojans with 40 goals, including a game-winner with three seconds left in All Saints regional finals victory.

Her goal-scoring prowess and playing a big role in All Saints completing a three-peat as state champs prompted the Tyler Morning Telegraph to choose her as MVP for the 2008 All-East Texas Girls Soccer Team.

“It was the hardest it has been this year,” Saunders said about All Saints’ third state crown.

“The finals was a shootout, and that was really tough because (Argyle Liberty) was a good team and they are all freshmen, so we will be seeing them again.”

Saunders has ascended to the MVP quickly, earning Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman before being a first-team forward last year. Upon hearing that she was voted MVP, Saunders said she was “very surprised.”

“I figured a senior would get it because I know they are some studs; I mean there are some studly, studly seniors playing this year,” Saunders said. “Players like Kendall Frizzell, who is phenomenal, so I was very surprised.”

The pressure is on for Saunders in her senior year to repeat as MVP, a feat no one has accomplished yet while leading All Saints to a fourth state title.

Cameron Brown

Newcomer of the Year: Cameron Brown, Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill’s Cameron Brown is the youngest and shortest of all this year’s All East Texas first teamers.

It didn’t stop the freshman forward from scoring 25 goals in difficult District 17-4A, against the likes of Lindale, Pine Tree and Whitehouse.

Her youth and scoring touch prompted the Tyler Morning Telegraph to choose her as Newcomer of the Year for the 2008 All-East Texas Girls Soccer Team.

“I’ve played soccer basically my whole life, since I was three or four, so (the pressure of being young didn’t bother me,” Brown said.

“Some of the goals I felt like I did, but most of them my teammates, they just seemed to get me the ball.”

Virginia Slicker

Coach of the Year: Virginia Slicker, All Saints
Virginia Slicker had the unenviable task of following a two-time state champion coach. All Saints also hadn’t lost a game in over a year, and Slicker didn’t want to be the first coach to end that streak and fail to win state.

She accomplished both, piloting All Saints to a 24-0 record and a third-consecutive TAPPS Division II girls state soccer title.

This prompted the Tyler Morning Telegraph to chooser Slicker as Coach of the Year for the 2008 All-East Texas girls soccer team.

“It was pressure going in, having one loss in two years, but the one thing about it was the girls felt the pressure too,” Slicker said. “They don’t like to lose. I knew the girls wanted it and I knew they were going to do what they’d done the past two years.”

Slicker gave her most important halftime talk of the season during the state semifinals. All Saints was trailing Grapevine Faith Christian 2-0.

“I just said, “This isn’t us, this isn’t how we play, and we win,’” Slicker said. “We are a second-half team and we can come back.”

All Saints responded with three goals in 12 minutes to secure a place in the state final.

The Lady Trojans needed a penalty kick shootout to defeat Argyle Liberty Christian.

“When it came down to the shootout, it was amazing how calm they were,” Slicker said. “We’d been practicing for weeks on it and they knew they had it.”
