Teens Indicted In Plot To Kill Girl's Father
April Rhoten and her boyfriend, James Neal Perkins. remained in the Smith County Jail Monday after being indicted for conspiracy to commit murder for an alleged plot to kill the girl's father.

On Feb. 29, Tyler Police detectives arrested Ms. Rhoten, a Robert E. Lee student, and Perkins for an alleged plan to "slit the father's throat while he slept," police said.

Don Martin, the agency's public information officer, said police learned that the pair had planned for some time to kill Dennis Rhoten, the girl's adopted father.

Martin said after hearing the information, they learned Perkins was wanted on a state-jail felony warrant for an incident at Chapel Hill High School, so they went to his workplace at Goodwill Industries on West Locust Street and arrested him.

Smith County Sheriff Lt. Larry Wiginton said the incident at the Chapel Hill High School consisted of Perkins leaving anonymous notes on a teacher's desk threatening to kill a female student.

Detectives then began questioning Perkins and learned he had been told by Ms. Rhoten that her father had been abusing her. They also learned the plot was very real.

"She had originally told the boyfriend that her father beat her and did other things, and had convinced him to kill her father," Martin said. "This was a definite conspiracy and more than just talk."

Martin said police have not been able to verify the girl's accusations, and they believe she made them up to develop the murder plot.

Ms. Rhoten was taken into custody at the high school.

The pair remains in jail on $750,000 bonds each for the conspiracy to commit murder charge.
