Tyler police officers take Tucker Hambrecht, 23, into custody after a four-and-one-half-hour standoff which began just after 11 p.m. Monday at 3004 Tanglewood Drive in Tyler. Hambrecht kept law enforcement at bay with a gun until S.W.A.T. used tear gas to subdue the subject.

A more than four-hour long standoff in the 3000 block of Tanglewood Drive in Tyler ended around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when police deployed tear gas into a garage where a 23-year-old man holed up in a vehicle.

Police said the man discharged his weapon four times, although it was unclear if he shot at officers or in the air. No one was injured during the incident.

Police took the suspect, Tucker Hambrecht, into custody and charged him with felony evading arrest, said Don Martin, public information officer for the Tyler Police Department. His bond was set at $50,000.

Authorities worked to coax the suspect out peacefully once the standoff began a little after 11 p.m. Monday.

"He attempted to come out and then went back in and this went back and forth a couple times," Martin said at the scene after the standoff ended. "At one point when they thought he was not going to come out peacefully, they employed the stun grenade."

If close enough, the stun grenade would have disoriented him enough so authorities could have taken him into custody. Other non-lethal weapons were also fired at the suspect, Martin said.

"He was able to get back in the garage," he said. "The rounds you heard after that were actually tear gas."

After the standoff ended, authorities led the handcuffed suspect to emergency vehicles, first to the ambulance, where Martin said he was likely checked out because of the tear gas. He was then taken to a police vehicle.

The gun was located, Martin said, although he did not have specific information about the kind of gun it was just after the standoff ended.

The incident began around 10:15 p.m. with a call to police. Martin said a third party called in, alerting police that the man was driving around in his vehicle and had suicidal tendencies.

Police responded to 3004 Tanglewood Drive, where police said the man has lived. While at the scene, the subject drove by. North of that location, police attempted a traffic stop on the man's vehicle around 10:54 p.m. when, police said, he took off.

A "mini pursuit" began, and included the Smith County Sheriff's Office, but the chase ended less than 15 minutes later when the suspect returned to the home around 11:08 p.m., exiting his truck.

The suspect fired two to three rounds at that time, Martin said, although it was not clear whether he shot at officers or shot in the air. He then got inside a different vehicle inside an enclosed garage.

Before the standoff was over, the suspect had fired four rounds, Martin said, although it was not clear what the target was, if any.

SWAT team members and hostage negotiators were on the scene of the standoff. They communicated to the man by bullhorn, Martin said.

Martin said police are "extremely pleased that no one was hurt on either end and everyone did their job successfully."

"I know we've been out here quite a while, but that's part of it," he said. "We'll be out here as long as it takes to get the person out in a peaceful manner."
