Cool Weather Expected For Mother's Day
A pleasantly cool Mothers Day is forecast in East Texas.
Before the cold front can arrive early Sunday to keep that promise, a line of strong thunderstorms was forecast to cross the area during the overnight hours. There is the risk that these thunderstorms could become severe.
Two tornado watches were displayed for much of the region Saturday evening. Advised counties were: Hunt, Rains, Freestone, Kaufman, Navarro, Anderson, Henderson, Leon, Van Zandt, Fannin, Delta, Hopkins, Lamar, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Franklin, Harrison, Marion, Morris, Red River, Titus, Upshur, and Wood.
There were a few isolated showers in the area around mid-day.
The forecast strong thunderstorms for Saturday night had begun developing as of 6 p.m., with a ssevere thunderstorm cell about 90 miles west-northwest of Tyler over eastern Dallas County.
A dew point front was moving eastward through North Texas at late-afternoon. By 5 p.m., it had reached a Bridgeport-Brady line, and was forecast to enter East Texas by mid- evening.
A few hours behind that boundary was the cold front.
Both were being pulled eastward by an upper air low pressure area, which was crossing through Oklahoma.
Skies were cloudy for much of the day Saturday, with partial clearing coming at late-afternoon.
This held high temperatures up to 10 degrees below the very warm levels of Friday, with readings running from the high 70s to middle 80s.
High readings on Sunday should be in the 70s, with high 70s to lower 80s likely for Monday.
Low temperatures Saturday morning were from near 60 in the northwest to the lower 70s in the south. These were up to 10 degrees higher than on Friday morning.
Low readings Sunday should be from the middle 50s to middle 60s, with high 40s to middle 50s forecast for Monday morning.
Saturday's temperatures averaged near those of Friday, and were about 5 degrees above normal. Sunday temperatures should average about 8 degrees lower, with Monday temperatures a few degrees lower still.
Winds on Saturday were southerly at 10-20 mph with higher gusts during the afternoon.
Northwest winds at 10-15 mph with occasionally higher gusts are forecast for Sunday, with winds shifting into the southeast by Monday.
Tyler's highest sustaining wind Saturday was southerly at 23 mph with a peak gust of 29 mph and an average velocity of 9.1 mph. Friday's average wind velocity was 7.9 mph.
Saturday's average relative humidity was 76 percent, with lower values likely Sunday and Monday. Friday's average was 68 percent.
Light fog was present Saturday morning, with Tyler's visibility going to 4 miles at 8 a.m.
The weak cold front which crossed Friday evening came back northward Saturday as a warm front. It was the northward passage of this boundary, combining with weak upper air instability, which brought the mid-day showers. Areal coverage was under 10 percent, and amounts light.
