Daughters of the Republic Opens 117th State Convention On Thursday
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas officially will open the 117th State Convention on Thursday at Harvey Convention Center, Tyler, DRT spokesperson Betty Stokes said.
The organization is divided into 10 districts across the state. District IV, comprised of 12 chapters in East Texas, will host the event. The convention theme is “Gateway to Texas,” a reference to the entry of the original colonists over the El Camino Real and other early ferry crossings in East Texas, Ms. Stokes said.
Madge Thornall Roberts, the great-great-granddaughter of Sam Houston is the current president general. Mrs. Roberts is a fourth-generation member of DRT and was elected to a two-year term as president general in 2007.
Mrs. Roberts is a noted author. She wrote “Star of Destiny: The Private Life of Sam and Margaret Houston,” which received the best book of the year award, presented by the East Texas Historical Association. Mrs. Roberts also edited a four-volume series of “The Personal Correspondence of Sam Houston.”
Volume I of this series won the best book on Texas history, presented by the Texas Historical Commission. The complete series was chosen by the
Austin American as one of the 20 best works on Texas history for the past decade, Ms. Stokes said.
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas is the oldest patriotic women’s organization in the state and was established in 1891 for those who could prove their lineal descent from a man or woman who served Texas before annexation in 1846.
