Voters Select Candidates For Mayor, City Council Today
Today is Election Day.

In many places, voters will select candidates running for seats on city councils, school boards and college boards. Special issues are also on the ballot in some areas.

Smith County Polling Sites
A person’s voting precinct is listed on their voter registration card.

What appears on the ballot depends on where one lives. In a few rural Smith County voting precincts, there are no contested races and elections are not being held. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Tyler City Council Races
On Tyler City Council, posts of mayor and the representative for District 6 will be decided.

Mayor Joey Seeber cannot run again because of term limits. Three are seeking the seat: Laura Corbett, a Realtor; Barbara Bass, a certified public accountant; and Keith Pyron, an artist.

In District 6, incumbent Charles Alworth, an engineer and attorney, is being challenged by Larry Meckley, a retired schoolteacher.

District 6 extends from its northern boundary along East Fifth Street, western boundary along South Broadway Avenue, eastern boundary from Texas Highway 110 to Dennis Street, along Paluxy Drive and to the city’s southern limits along Skidmore Lane.

Tyler Liquor Proposition
Residents in Tyler will approve or reject a proposal that would allow: “The legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only.”

A “yes” vote would abolish the “private membership” requirements at local restaurants. The election will only decide the private membership requirements; it does not address package sales of alcohol in Smith County.

It would also allow beverage delivery trucks to make deliveries in the city of Tyler, and loosen some restrictions on advertising alcoholic beverages.

Tyler ISD
Five candidates are running for the District 4 seat on the TISD Board of Trustees. They are: Cody Savell, a pharmaceutical sales representative; Dale Blackstone, owner of a landscaping business; Tonya Roberson-Redic, a real estate broker; and Shirley Jordan, a retired nurse. John D. Johnson III has dropped out of the race; however, his name appears on the ballot.

District 4 represents western areas of the district.

TJC Board
One contested seat, Place 9, is up for election on the Tyler Junior College Board of Trustees. The candidates are Melinda Coker, a former director of TJC’s Career and Placement department; Rohn Boone, a partner in Boone & Boone Construction; and Steven Sherwood, a pharmacist.

Any registered voter in the TJC taxing district can vote in the election. The district includes most of Smith County and a portion of Van Zandt County.

Winona ISD and City Council
Two seats on the Winona ISD Board are up for election. Tim Thompson and Randy Hawkins are vying for Place 3 and Bubba Bixler and Tony Mathis are running for Place 4.

On Winona City Council, Pat Schlau, Michael Jones, Bob Davis and Tommy Brock are running for three seats up for election.

Whitehouse City Council
Candidate Jeremy McEuen announced Friday in a letter to the city of Whitehouse that he will be unable to serve as mayor because “recent events” will not allow him to dedicate enough time as mayor. His name will remain on the ballot but he will resign if he wins and said voters should support candidate Danny Hogden for mayor.

Troup ISD
Place 3 is contested on the Troup ISD Board. Keith Lindsey and Kevin Martin are running for the seat.
