Mother, Son Die In Accident Near Rusk
RUSK - A woman and a child died in a two-vehicle car wreck east of Rusk on Thursday morning, according to Texas Department of Public Safety.
Cherry Lynn Grimes, 31, of Rusk, and her 5-year-old son Trevor Gage Langford died after Grimes' car collided with an SUV.
According to DPS investigators, Grimes' vehicle was traveling eastbound five and a half miles east of Rusk on U.S. Highway 84 around 7:30 a.m. when her car ran off the road. Grimes overcorrected, went into a "side-spin" and struck a 2001 GMC Yukon traveling in the westbound lane. The posted speed in that area is 70 miles an hour, DPS said. Grimes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The young boy died at East Texas Medical Center in Rusk a few hours later. Twelve-year-old Lauren Langford survived and is in serious condition at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, La.
Six others from the other vehicle, mostly children, were injured in the wreck. The children's ages range from 7 months old to 9 years old.
The driver, passenger and one of the children suffered serious injuries and the other three children were treated and released, DPS said. All of the individuals in the wreck were wearing their seatbelts.
Grimes was taking her children to school when the accident occurred, said a spokeswoman with Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk.
