Jarvis College President Retiring
Dr. Sebetha Jenkins
HAWKINS — Dr. Sebetha Jenkins, Jarvis Christian College president, announced Friday she will retire effective Dec. 31.

She will begin a sabbatical on Aug. 1, but will help during a transition in leadership, the college announced.

“I will miss the ever-changing higher education atmosphere, the beautifully landscaped campus and the numerous opportunities to influence the lives of my motivated and deserving Jarvis scholars, faculty, and staff,” she said in a prepared statement.

She also thanked alumni and trustees for ongoing support.

She has been the president of JCC since January 1991.

A committee to find a replacement for Dr. Jenkins will be headed by Board of Trustees’ Chairman James Atkinson.

During her tenure, Dr. Jenkins oversaw new construction and major renovations and accreditation reaffirmations in 1993 and 2003. The college also reported increases in alumni involvement and giving and increases student enrollment.

In a statement released by the college, trustee Eddie Poindexter, said, “Rather than dwell on the retirement of our president, I would prefer that the college community join me in being thankful for the opportunity we have had to have her services for 17 years.”

Prior to joining JCC, Dr. Jenkins was a teacher and administrator in higher education in Mississippi and Ohio. She completed her master’s degree from Delta State and received a doctorate from Mississippi State.

JCC is a private four-year liberal arts college. It has 700 students and is a member of the United Negro College Fund.
