Bullard made its second straight win over Spring Hill much like the first, but this it time came in the postseason.

Nick Rumbelow pitched a complete game and Bullard scored five runs with two outs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-1 win in Game 1 of a Class 3A area playoff series Thursday at Mike Carter Field.

Bullard rallied for five runs in the seventh earlier in the season in a non-district contest to beat Spring Hill, 6-3, after a change on the mound. Freshman Dylan Brown started that game and Thursday’s, limiting Bullard’s offense effectively.

Brown gave up two earned runs, one of which after he was replaced by Brandon Arden, before Bullard tacked five runs on the board.

“I don’t know what it was when they changed pitchers,” said Bullard coach Ronnie Dent. “All of a sudden something happened.”

Game 2 is noon Saturday at Hallsville. Game 3, if necessary, is 30 minutes following.

Bullard (20-7) will send southpaw Jacob Whatley, who pitched a no-hitter in the regular-season finale, to the mound and Spring Hill (24-5) will start ace Garrett Methvin — who allowed Bullard’s five-run rally last meeting.

Rumbelow worked all seven innings, struck out nine and managed to overcome three big jams by allowing one run. Spring Hill got the first two runners on base in the first and fifth innings and stranded both each time.

“I just go out there and pitch. I know my defense is going to back me up,” Rumbelow said. “When I’m feeling it, I know what I can do.”

Spring Hill struck first in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Scott Powell to score Miles Peloquin. Bullard followed with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Cameron Agnew.

Bullard used RBI singles by Charlie Moore, Rumbelow, an RBI double from Whatley and a two-run double by Lance Anding, who nearly cleared the left-field fence on the first pitch.

Moore and Ryan Clarke both went 2-for-3 for Bullard, and Anding went 2-for-4.

“That’s just one win,” Dent said. “It takes two to get outta here.”
