Firefighter Injured At House Fire
A two-alarm fire destroyed a garage apartment and injured one firefighter Thursday morning.
Tyler Fire Department firefighters responded to the fire at around 11:20 a.m. in the 1200 block of Pabst Avenue. When they arrived, the two-story garage apartment was fully engulfed in flames.
“The structure suffered extensive damage and is a total loss,” fire investigator Paul Findley said in a media release.
One firefighter on scene sustained second-degree burns to his hand and was taken to a Tyler hospital for treatment and released later that day.
Fire investigators said no one was home when the fire broke out and believe the fire started downstairs in the garage area then spread to other parts of the house.
Findley added that the structure is unstable and investigators are not yet able to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Officials said one family member living in the apartment told investigators they were having electrical problems for the past two months.
The family of five is now staying with other family members, and the Red Cross was called in to assist.
