Tyler Junior College, Hillsborough Share Lead at NJCAA Women’s Tennis Championship
TUCSON, Ariz. — The top-ranked Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies are no longer perfect, but they still control their own destiny.

TJC advanced four singles players and two doubles teams into the semifinal round Tuesday at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship.

The Apache Ladies enter today’s competition tied for first in the team standings with Hillsborough Community College from Tampa, Fla.

The teams have each compiled 42 points, but Hillsborough is still alive in seven main draws compared to six for TJC.

Hillsborough has also been picking up points in the back draw of Flight 1 doubles.

“We still control our own destiny,” said TJC head coach John Peterson. “We bump head up with Hillsborough a couple of times and they are on the leaderboard.”

TJC will face Hillsborough in the Flight 2 semifinals when No. 2 seed Priscillia Villemond plays No. 4 seed Bridgette Carrillo.

In Flight 3 doubles, TJC’s Iris Rendon and Kelly Rittenhouse will battle Hillsborough top seeds Eva Sambrano and Katherine Laine.

TJC sophomore Ashley Irvin was eliminated in Flight 1 by Baylor signee Kasia Siwosz of Cowley County (Kan.) in three sets.

Irvin trailed 4-0 in the second set before reeling off six straight games to force a third set.

“She got down 3-0 in the third and won a couple of games and I thought she was going to win the match,” Peterson said of Irvin.

Irvin was also eliminated in Flight 1 doubles with teammate Villemond.

The pair lost in the quarterfinals to Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) College, which is in third place in the team standings.
