Chapel Hill's Reeves Signs Cycling Scholarship

NEW CHAPEL HILL — One summer day while watching Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France, Thacker Reeves found the sport of a lifetime.

NEW CHAPEL HILL — One summer day while watching Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France, Thacker Reeves found the sport of a lifetime.
Reeves discovered cycling and on Tuesday his passion for the sport turned into a college scholarship as he signed with Cumberland University.
Reeves, the Chapel Hill High School honor student, signed during a ceremony at the CHHS Library before family, friends, teachers and coaches.
“I’m very happy and thrilled,” said Reeves of signing with the Lebanon, Tenn., college.
It’s not often a student can sign a scholarship for cycling, and Reeves is honored to get the chance.
“I visited Cumberland last summer,” said Reeves, who also ran cross country for Chapel Hill. “Cumberland offers a lot of opportunities not only on the bike but academically as well.”
Reeves, a National Honor Society member, is ranked No. 9 in his class. He is planning to major in pre-physical therapy.
Among those attending the ceremony were his parents, Rusty and Glynis Reeves, sister Bridget Reeves, CH athletic director Phil Castles, CHHS principal Lamond Dean, Chapel Hill Independent School District Superintendent Joe Stubblefield and counselor Frances Palmer.
In the fall, Reeves said he will be competing in mountain bike racing. The Bulldogs finished seventh in the nation last fall at the National Collegiate Cycling Association national championship at Banner Elk, N.C.
The spring season consists of criterium cycling and long distance. The Bulldogs are competing in the national championship this weekend in Fort Collins, Colo.
Reeves added, “It’s a great feeling to help my parents out by receiving a scholarship. They have been so supportive of me.”
