Edgewood’s Streak Ends; Martins Mill Girls Win UIL Golf Title
From Staff Reports

AUSTIN — The reign has come to an end.

The Edgewood boys golf team was denied a third consecutive state championship at the Class 2A state tournament Tuesday at Roy Kizer Golf Course. The Bulldogs finished two strokes behind Salado after entering the final round with a two-stroke lead.

The Bulldogs’ defeat came on a day when one area school celebrated a team championship, while a defending medalist champion was denied a repeat.

Martins Mill ran away with the 1A girls championship at Morris Williams Golf Course. The Lady Mustangs, who placed second last season, fired a two-round 673 to finish a dominant 87 strokes better than the rest of the field.

Kelsey Kirkpatrick of Alba-Golden, the defending state champion, finished second in 2A girls. She fired a two-round 148 (75-73) to end the tournament six strokes behind San Saba’s Shelby Hardy (70-72—142).

Wall won the team championship (322-333—655).

Led by Ryan O’Rear’s first-place performance (73-67—140), the Salado boys shaved 17 strokes off their opening-day total to finish at 619 (318-301). The performance was good enough to overcome Edgewood’s recent dominance, which ended with the Bulldogs shooting rounds of 316 and 305 for 621.

Edgewood was led by Dillion Phillips’ sixth-placing showing at 151 (78-73). Teammate Justin King finished three rounds back at 154 (79-75—154).

Other Bulldogs at the tournament were Calvin King (80-77—157), Michael Waites (79-80—159) and Jason Knotts (82-87—169).

Meanwhile, Harmony’s Joe Ross place fourth among individuals at 148 after rounds of 79 and 69 in 2A boys.

Troup placed seventh in the 2A boys team standings at 706 (344-362). The Tigers were led by Jordan Jackson (83-82—165), Cory Caraway (78-91—169), Drew Marshall (86-88—174), Curt Lindsey (91-101—198) and Brad Brentley (97-104—201).

In 1A girls, Martins Mill’s Emily Wharton helped her team’s cause with a third place finish among individuals. She fired a 154 (82-72) to finish 14 strokes behind champion Gabriella Dominguez of Chilton.

Other Martins Mill participants were Christa Williams (88-79—167), Whitney Johnson (91-83—174), Emily Williams (92-86—178) and Kayla Glidewell (106-110—216).

Grapeland’s Ashley Brown finished at 190 (92-98—190).

In 1A boys, Grapeland’s Ruston Boyd took top honors at 151 following rounds of 77 and 74. He finished two strokes ahead of Robert Lee’s Logan Philley.
