Mother's Day Idea: Potting Plants
TMT Staff Photo By Kelly Prew
Three-year-old Jisela Martinez collects potting soil with her hands to put into her flower pot, while Justin Carlile, 4, waits for his teacher to instruct him on the next step of the potting process.
From Staff Reports

A potted plant makes a wonderful and heartwarming gift made by a child.

If your child is old enough, they can do the work themselves. However, adult supervision is necessary for the little ones.

  • Plastic milk jug (empty) OR a flower pot.

  • Planting soil

  • Seeds of fast-growing plants

  • Water

  • Sun

  • And a little TLC

  • Plan:

Take a regular milk jug and cut off the top, leaving the handle and the rest intact.

Have the children fill the jug with soil, and plant a rose seed, or another quick-growing flower seed in the soil.

Place a small ruler in the soil, next to where the child planted the seed. Water the pot plant daily, and make sure it gets enough sun.

Have the children record, with Mom's help, how much the plant grows in a week, two weeks, etc.

Craft Idea: On the outside of the pot/jug, use a black marker, and in big lettering write "Thanks For Helping Me Grow, Mom."
