Texas College Basketball Coach Resigns
Texas College Athletic Director Jay Brown announced today the resignation of the Steer men’s basketball Coach Matthew Cross.
Cross stepped down as the Steers head coach to take the same responsibilities at Talladega College in Alabama, where he will join former Texas College president Billy C. Hawkins.
During his 2-year tenure at the helm of the Steer program, Cross engineered an amazing turnaround winning the 2007-2008 Red River Athletic Conference Championship with an overall record of 20-14 (12-4 in conference play).
Coach Cross joined Texas College in 2006 as an assistant coach under head coach Chancelor Watson. Halfway through the season, he took over a struggling Steer basketball program as the interim head coach. He managed to finish the 2006-2007 season with a 6-16 overall record (5-11 in conference).
His hard work and determination was recognized in 2007 when he was named the Steers men’s basketball coach on a permanent basis. Besides winning the 2007-2008 RRAC Championship, Coach Cross tutored several student-athletes to All-RRAC status. Among those were Jameus Hartsfield (national leader in offensive rebounds per game, steals per game and total rebounds per game), Jeral Davis (national leader in blocks per game) and Czyz Bennett (sixth nationally in points per game).
Brown said, “Our athletic department will miss Coach Cross and wishes him the best in his new position at Talladega College. He brought another championship to our college and we are grateful to him for his services. We will continue to build on his success with his successor. The search for Coach Cross’ replacement will start immediately.”
