Van Players Claim Wins In UIL State Tennis Championships
AUSTIN — Persistent rains put a damper on the first day of the UIL state tennis championships on Monday, but they didn’t stop three Van players from advancing to the semifinals.
Matthew Ribeiro advanced in Class 3A boys singles and the duo of Natalie Hand and Josh Wilgus advanced in mixed doubles to today’s semifinals at the Penick-Allison courts on The University of Texas at Austin campus.
Because rains delayed play for more than six hours, the semifinals and finals were pushed back to today, beginning at 8 a.m. for singles and 9:30 a.m. for doubles.
Ribeiro, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, routed Ingram Moore’s Cullen Holbrook 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. He will face Silsbee’s Matthew Deaver in the semifinals.
Hand and Wilgus beat the La Feria team of Elias Hernandez and Erika Gilbert 6-1, 6-1. They will face Argyle’s Mary Bowman and Eric Katzen in the semifinals.
Also in mixed doubles, Spring Hill’s Christopher Lee and Kacy Aldredge beat La Feria’s Shane Mettlen and Danielle Gilbert 6-0, 6-2. The Spring Hill duo will meet Abilene Wylie’s Lindsey Bloomer and Doug Kierstead for a shot at the finals.
Cameron Yoe’s Brittni Fausett, who won the 2A girls singles state title last year for Winona, cruised in her quarterfinal match over La Feria’s Mia Villasenor 6-0, 6-1.
In 2A girls doubles, Grand Saline’s Macy McMakin and Samantha Treder defeated Wallis Brazos’ team of Jennifer Brandt and Lauren Boggs in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Grand Saline’s Josephina Hernandez lost to Peaster’s Molly Welsh in girls singles, 6-0, 6-0.
In 2A mixed doubles, Godley’s James Crutchley and Courtney McFarlin defeated Edgewood’s team of Emily Eggleston and Hugo Quatrochi, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Also, Brock’s Levi Joy and Morgan Hammons beat Harmony’s Lindsey Shipp and Bo Sullivan 6-1, 6-3.
Edgewood’s boys doubles team of Justin Strickland and Taylor Tyndell lost to Big Lake Reagan County’s Brit Campbell and Joel Hernandez, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Floydada’s team of Kevin and Kolby Smith beat Quitman’s Josh Farrell and Peter Borke in boys doubles, 6-4, 6-4.
In 1A boys singles, Gruver’s Taylor Williams beat Alto’s Trevor Hagerty in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
