Edgewood Boys Lead After First Round Of UIL State Golf Tournament
AUSTIN — The Edgewood boys and the Martins Mill girls are atop the leaderboard after Monday’s first round of the UIL State Golf Tournament.

Also, Alba-Golden’s Kelsey Kirkpatrick is fourth in the Class 2A tourney.

Edgewood is shooting for a three-peat as the Bulldogs have won the last two Class 2A state titles.

The Bulldogs, playing on the par 71 Roy Kizer Golf Course, combined for a 316 to lead Salado by two strokes. Sonora is third at 326.

Rounding out the field are Muleshoe (336), Franklin (343), Troup (344), Nocona (346) and Lone Oak (357).

The second and final round is today.

Dillon Phillips paced the Edgewood squad with a 78. He is tied for seventh, along with Troup’s Cory Caraway.

Rounding out the Edgewood team are Justin King (79), Michael Waites (79), Calvin King (80) and Jason Knotts (82).

Joining Caraway on the Troup squad are Jordan Jackson (83), Drew Marshall (86), Curt Lindsey (97) and Brad Bentley (97).

Joe Ross of Harmony is tied for 12th along with Justin King and Waites, all with 79s.

John Duke Hudson of Sonora leads the 2A field with a 1-under 70. He leads Jade Scott of Daingerfield by two strokes. Ryan O’Rear of Salado is third with a 73.

In girls Class 2A, Wall leads with a 322. Rounding out the field is San Saba (346), Edna (350), Callisburg (351), Olney (378), Salado (379), Newton (381) and Jefferson (391).

Shelby Hardy of San Saba leads with a 70, while defending state champ Kirkpatrick is fourth with a 75. Kendra Whittley is second with a 73 and Edna’s Meredith Kresta is fourth with a 74.

Martins Mill tops the Class A girls field with a 353 on the Morris Williams Golf Course.

The Lady Mustangs lead Baird (390) and Wellington (390) by 37 strokes. The rest of the field includes: Merit Bland (422), Fort Davis (433), Iraan (435), Goldthwaite (435) and Flatonia (438).

Pacing the Martins Mill squad is Emily Wharton, who is fifth with an 82. Gabriella Dominguez of Chilton leads with a 70, while Brittany Smith of Petrolia is second with a 72. Macalee Lane of Olton and Macy Davis of Memphis are tied for third with 81s.

Other Martins Mill golfers include: Christa Williams (88), Whitney Johnson (91), Emily Williams (92) and Kayla Glidewell (106).

Grapeland’s Ashley Brown carded a 92.

Robert Lee leads the Class A boys with a 328, while Meridian is second at 348.

Other teams include: Iraan (349); Yantis (351); Goldthwaite (352); Garden City (355); Olton (365); and Lindsay (368).

Logan Philley of Robert Lee and Cameron Swarb of White Deer are tied for first with 74s. Ruston Boyd of Grapeland is third at 77, while Yantis’ Cord Burnett is tied for fourth after firing a 78.

Other Yantis scores include: Kenny Nunez (88): Daniel Cerrani (91); Darren Burgess (94) and Carl Jordan (96).

Elsewhere, Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery shot a 4-under 68 to take the opening round lead in the girls’ Class 4A state championship at Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Highland Park’s Cody Gribble led the boys’ tournament with a 2-under 70.

Montgomery Purple leads the girls 4A team race with a 321, followed by Highland Park (323), Austin Lake Travis (337), New Braunfels (341), Aledo (342), Montgomery Gold (345), Hereford (361) and Frisco (367).

In the boys race, Highland Park leads with a 294. The Scots are followed by Katy Seven Lakes (310), McKinney Boyd (310), San Antonio Alamo Heights (311), Huntsville (312), Austin Lake Travis (313), Fort Worth Arlington Heights (319) and Aledo (328).

Pine Tree’s Travis Chrietzberg fired a 74 and is tied for fifth.

The 3A and 5A tournaments are Thursday and Friday.
