Robert E. Lee captured a second-consecutive District 12-5A soccer title and head coach Rich Brands was honored again as district coach of the year.

It was one of three superlatives the Red Raiders accrued recently as 12-5A coaches voted on the 2008 All-District 12-5A boys soccer team.

Senior Abdiel Palomo was named offensive player of the year and senior Juan Robles received goalkeeper of the year honors. Palomo led the Red Raiders with 15 goals while Robles finished with seven clean sheets.

All told, Lee received 14 selections with John Tyler placing eight players on the team.

Lee juniors Judson Hinsley and Alex Collins were first-team defenders, along with John Tyler’s Renato Munoz.

In midfield on the first team was Lee junior Kenny Conner. Despite suffering a season-ending injury in the middle of district, Conner still finished with six goals and six assists. REL junior Diego Deluna also earned first-team midfield honors.

John Tyler senior Cristobal Perez, who led the area with 19 goals, rounded out the first-team midfielder selections.

The lone Smith County player to be tabbed first-team forward was Lee senior Robert Zafra after he finished with five goals and eight assists.

Named to the second team from Lee were senior defender Bryan Karasek, junior midfielder Cesar Cadena, junior Bertin Hernandez. John Tyler was represented on the second team by senior defender Erasmo Garcia, midfielder Moises Barrara, and Vagni Varona, Jr.

Named honorable mention were Lee’s Chris Avila, Ryan DeSalvo and Taylor Matlock; and John Tyler’s Justin Cornelio, Christian Carrillio and Jacobo Valente.
