Young was associated with many civic organizations in the Houston area, including East Harris County Chemical Plant Security Committee, Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, and Harris/Galveston County Maritime Security Committee. He also was on the Criminal Justice Board at San Jacinto College and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

"Chief Young was a highly respected leader in law enforcement as well as his community, the Gulf Coast area, and across the state of Texas. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues," said Acting Chief Kenneth Findley of Deer Park.

Findley was an assistant chief of police with the Tyler Police Depart-ment.

Young had a 37-year career in policing. He began with the Houston Police Department and retired at the rank of assistant chief after 21 years of service. He accepted the position of chief of police for Pueblo, Colo., for three years.

During his tenure in Deer Park, the department achieved accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies while being the driving force behind its state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2004.

Young is survived by his wife, Cheryl Young; daughter, Christine Biehle; son, Brannon Young; stepson Justin Rhodes; three grandchildren; brothers, James, Benny and Everett Young; sister, Darlene Goodson; and numerous other family and friends.
