Komen Teams Make Difference
Teams for the Komen Tyler Race for the Cure begin the registration process early.
Some are making an effort to win recognition for the largest team. Some choose to honor or remember family members with their participation as a team. Each year the number of teams increases along with the number of participants on each team.
The deadline for team registration has passed for 2008, and a total of 87 teams with more than 2,800 team members have signed up.
Hubbard Middle School teacher, Sandy Varner, has formed a team for several years. She started out with a team of about 20, most of whom were Hubbard teachers. That team has grown to more than 500 members.
Mrs. Varner says the online registration process has been a great tool for increasing the size of the Hubbard team.
"Last year, with the teams being online it was really easy to open the team to our entire student body and their families. We advertised through announcements, through our Husky e-news, and within the classrooms, and we have done well with our teams.''
The school will also observe a "Jeans Day'' at the school where the students who are entered can wear their Komen shirts and jeans, Ms. Varner said.
In 2007, more than half the race participants registered as part of a team. Churches, businesses, friends and organizations need to gather 10 or more people to become a team. Team members receive their race T-shirts and bib numbers early and are automatically part of a contest for the largest team.
Some teams design and wear shirts displaying their team name. A few have private race celebrations before or after the race festivities. The top three teams with the most participants are recognized on race day at the awards ceremony. Registration is available for individuals at many locations the week of the race and at 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the race.
