April 24: The Company McCain Keeps
Heidi Lockridge asks for someone to explain the relationship between the Rev. Wright, William Aker and Rashid Khalidi. Over and over Obama is attacked, not for his words, but for the words of others. This takes away from discussing the issues and what is important in this upcoming election.

Having said that, I'll play the game. First, I would like to know about the Keating Five. These were five U.S. senators who met with Charles Keating in the savings and loan scandals of the '80s. You might recall that taxpayers had to bail out the savings and loan companies for illegal dealings. Keating, I believe, received jail time, Neil Bush, President Bush's brother, agreed to an out-of-court settlement rather that face jail time. Jeb Bush was involved although never prosecuted.

Five senators involved (the Keating Five) were investigated for ethics violations. The five were John McCain, John Glenn, Dennis DeConcini, Don Riegle and Alan Cranston.

We can continue to play the swift boat games of guilt by association, or we can really take a look at the candidates' stands on issues and where they want to take this nation and make an intelligent choice in November.

Too often in recent elections, the outcome has been based on one-issue votes, and while the American public was scared into voting for one candidate over another, the country's infrastructure, our economy, and the value of the dollar has crumbled around us. The prices of food, utilities, gasoline and just about everything else are starting to rise at alarming rates.

Barack Obama is an honorable man who has devoted his life to working with the poor and middle class. His funds come from over 1.3 average Americans instead of lobbyists. He stands for improving education, providing more funding for college educations, for tax cuts for the middle class, for providing the opportunity for all ameicans to buy health insurace at a fair price. He also asks Americans to give back service to the country in exchange for help with their college expenses. He asks parents to turn off the TV sets so their children can learn. Most important, he is asking his followers to help him make the changes needed in Washington.

Rather than saying, "When I get to Washington, I will do this," etc., he says "When we get to Washington, we can change this country." This is the most inspirational candidate this country has had since Robert F. Kennedy.
