April 22: Future At Stake
RESPONSE: The price of chicken just went up. I groan to myself as I read the Web site for the Tyler Morning Telegraph, "Federal agents round up as many as 100 undocumented workers from the Pilgrim's Pride chicken plant in Mount Pleasant." Those federal agents do a wonderful job protecting us. Our tax dollars hard at work.
I am sure we all get a warm and fuzzy feeling, knowing our public servants are busy ridding us of those chicken pluckers. What a real threat to our economy those illegal men and women are. I can only imagine the number of legal Americans who have applied for the chicken pluckers' jobs, only to be turned down. Oh, the disappointment of having their hopes for a happy and successful life dashed because of an "illegal" worker. I can hear their parents now.
"I wanted my young 'un to get a good job down at the plant plucking chickens. Life just isn't fair."
And what about the terrible situation concerning the workers who harvest strawberries down in Poteet, Texas? It would be impossible to calculate the number of legal men and women who missed out on the backbreaking job of picking strawberries 10 hours a day. Or what about our young people's chance to land the job to end all jobs, cleaning commodes and changing the soiled bed linens down at the local hotel?
How many of our high school grads have to be disappointed that they can't run a Weedeater all day in the hot August sun? The list could go on and on, but you get the picture.
It is time for action. Something must be done about those illegal aliens. After all, the future of our young people is at stake.
