All Saints Episcopal School middle school students who were challenged to make a difference in the community presented a $1,006 donation this morning to East Texas Food Bank.
After the school’s annual Community Service Day was canceled earlier this year because of bad weather, a group of seven students were challenged by advisor Sherry Johnson in the technology department to come up with a plan of action.
The students decided to raise money for the food bank. After conducting bake sales and other fund-raising efforts, they were joined in their drive by their seventh- and eighth-grade peers, said information from the school.
“They understood the needs of many and undertook the challenge, and their enthusiasm drew others into their plan, resulting in a surprising and gratifying total of $1,006.15, or enough to feed 8,049 people,” said Richard Beard, head of the school.
Robert Bush, food bank director, said that each dollar donated will be used to provide eight meals.
Bush went to the school this morning to accept the donation.
“We are so proud of these middle school students for taking the initiative to raise money and help feed our neighbors in need,” he said.
