United Daughters Of Confederacy To Tribute Soldier
The combined efforts of two United Daughters of the Confederacy chapters will pay tribute to a Confederate soldier at 10 a.m. today at Midway Cemetery, 11886 County Road 1113, one block west on Lake Placid from Texas Highway 155.
An official UDC Grave Marking Ceremony will honor Pvt. Jesse Madison Taylor of the 10th Alabama Infantry, Company K-Wilcox Brigade, who migrated to Smith County after the Civil War. The event will be co-sponsored by the Mollie Moore Davis Chapter 217 of Tyler, and the Lucy Holcombe Pickens Chapter 2615 of Denton, said Maxine Herbst, president of the Tyler chapter.
"The reason for the co-sponsorship is that each of these prestigious chapters has new members that are great-granddaughters of the honoree," Mrs. Herbst said.
The great-granddaughters are Lynda Sutton Weitzman of Tyler, Angie Taylor Hare of Gainesville and Pamela Taylor Moorman of Arlington.
The event will be highlighted by special efforts of the color guard, Descendants of Confederate Veterans, a Texas association, and the Military Order of Stars and Bars.
Many direct Taylor descendants from Smith County and Texas are expected to attend to help honor their kinsman, Mrs. Herbst said.
