Gilmer Graduate Kinne To Transfer From Texas
AUSTIN (AP) - G.J. Kinne is transferring again, this time under much more normal circumstances.

The Texas Longhorns quarterback said Friday he is leaving the team after one redshirt season to find more playing time elsewhere. Kinne was behind starter Colt McCoy and sophomores John Chiles and Sherrod Harris on the depth chart.

In 2006, Kinne left Canton High School after his dad, the head coach, was shot by an angry parent. He transferred to Gilmer and was a two-time Class 3A offensive player of the year.

"Quarterbacks transfer in college football," said Kinne, who hasn't picked a new school. "That's life for this position."

Kinne originally gave an oral commitment to Baylor, where his father, Gary Joe Kinne, was hired as an assistant a season after he was shot in the stomach in the Canton field house. The younger Kinne eventually switched his pledge to Texas.

Gary Joe Kinne was critically injured in the shooting but returned a few months later to lead Canton in 2005, with his son as the quarterback.

The elder Kinne then left for Baylor, his alma mater, and his son decided to play his final high school season in Gilmer.

At Texas, G.J. Kinne took his redshirt season in 2007 but was still near the back of a logjam at quarterback.

"Even though we hate to see him go, we understand he wants to play," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "We wish him lots of luck and will continue to follow his progress."

Gary Joe Kinne spent two seasons at Baylor before head coach Guy Morriss was fired and replaced by Art Briles in November. He was recently hired as a high school head coach in Fresno, Calif.

Jeff Doyal Robertson was convicted of the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2006 and sentenced to the maximum 20 years in prison.
