A convenience store clerk is lucky to be alive after being shot in the head during an early morning robbery. Police are searching for the suspect they consider armed and dangerous and who is believed to be in the clerk’s car.
Kaufman County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan Francis said the robbery took place about 3:50 this morning at the Elmo Food Store at 7398 East Highway 80. Deputies quickly responded to the area after the clerk called 911.
Francis said the clerk thought the robbery was a joke at first.
“The clerk, not believing the suspect at first, did not comply. The suspect walked outside, then re-entered the location and produced an unknown type handgun,” he said.
Francis said the suspect again demanded money, and car keys from the clerk.
“The suspect fired a shot at the clerk, striking the clerk in the head. The suspect then left the location in an unknown direction,” he said.
Francis said the wounded clerk was still able to communicate with Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers.
The suspect is described as a white male, 5-10, 170 pounds with charcoal-colored hair. There was no clothing description.
The clerk was taken to Baylor Hospital in Dallas by ambulance and later released. The clerk’s injury is described as a “glancing gunshot wound to the head.”
Francis said the suspect left the location in the clerk’s four door 1994 White Toyota Corolla, with South Dakota personalized plates RAVI.
If anyone has information regarding this offense they are asked to contact the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office at 972-932-4337 and request the Criminal Investigations Division.
