Nano at DSP; Presidio Brass here

The Discovery Science Place, the hands-on children's museum in downtown Tyler, will introduce nano-based activities during Nano Day beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, museum officials announced.

The museum is one of 100 across the country selected to participate in the national nanoscience and engineering public awareness week. Visitors to Nano Day will explore the world of the very small with nanoscience activities and workshops which will be facilitated by Texas College students.

Discovery Science Place is a non-profit, hands-on learning environment whose purpose is to open young minds to science, technology, math and cultures in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Located at 308 N. Broadway in downtown Tyler, it is supported by grants, donations, admissions, memberships and special events.

PRESIDIO BRASS

Presidio Brass, performing musical styles ranging from Renaissance to contemporary jazz and film scores, will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tyler's Caldwell Auditorium, sponsored by the Tyler Community Concert Association, publicity spokesman John Springer said.

Season tickets, for $50 each, remain available and will be good for the rest of the season, which will include performances from The New Christy Minstrels, pianist Dale Gonyea, classical guitarist Pavlo and five other musical groups.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or by contacting TCCA's office at 903-592-6266.

Presidio Brass, from San Diego, Calif., is currently on a national tour of 50 cities. Members of the ensemble have performed with symphony orchestras such as the London Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Other credits range from motion picture soundtracks to video games.

CAMP FORD WEEKEND

The fourth Civil War Living History Weekend at Camp Ford is scheduled for Friday, through Sunday, publicity officials announced.

The weekend, which will feature re-enactors camping on site as well as blank cannon firing and rifle firing and other living history displays, will be held in conjunction with the annual Tyler Spring Flower and Azalea Trail.

Events will begin at 10 a.m. each day and conclude at 4 p.m.

Re-enactors from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana will take part.

A retirement of Confederate Flags Ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday and a church service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday.

ARTIST EXHIBITION

Artist Philana Oliphant has scheduled an exhibition at the For the Love Of Art Gallery from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday, April 4, officials announced.

The artist will showcase drawings, sculptures and prints. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, gallery officials said.

For The Love Of Art Gallery has been in operation since October 2007 and has showcased local artists and photographers. It is located in the Off Broadway Shopping Center across from Rose Hill Cemetery.

COWBOY CHURCH

A one-man musical comedy, "The Cowboy Ain't Dead Yet,'' featuring R.J. Vandygriff, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, April 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Cross Brand Cowboy Church, 11915 Farm-To-Market road South in Tyler, officials announced.

Adult donation tickets are $10 and children, $5. Tickets are available at Circle K Tack in Bullard and Baskins in Tyler.

BOOK SIGNINGS

Tyler author Robert Reed has scheduled two book signings this weekend, featuring his photographic history of Tyler, entitled "Tyler,'' officials announced.

From 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Reed will be signing copies at Camp Ford during a Civil War reenactment sponsored by the Smith County Historical Society. Camp Ford is located on Highway 271 North, just nort of Loop 323. For more information on the Saturday event, call 903-592-5993.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Reed will present a multimedia presentation of his book, which features more than 230 vintage photographs covering Tyler's history from its founding through the 1960s.

RIVERS IN CONCERT

WHITEHOUSE - Casey Rivers will be appear in a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Whitehouse High School auditorium, officials announced.

Proceeds will benefit the Shattered Dreams program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are available at Cavender's, the Tri-County Leader in Whitehouse and CardSmart in the Times Square Shopping Center in Tyler.

RANGERETTE REVELS

KILGORE - Tickets to the 63rd annual Rangerette Revels variety show, scheduled for April 9-11, are on sale at the box office, located on the first floor of the Rangerette Gym on the Kilgore College campus, officials said.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, April 9-11, and two performances will be held at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12.

Tickets for all nightly performances are $20 each and are all reserved. A ticket for the Saturday matinee performance is $15. Tickets can be purchased from the box office, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday. To purchase tickets by phone with a credit card, call 903-983-8179.

VOCAL MAJORITY

The Vocal Majority Chorus, featuring three East Texans, concludes its 2007-08 season with its 2008 Spring Shows "Best of Broadway" at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts in Richardson in three shows on April 18-19.

East Texas residents Mike Dunn of Longview (lead), Tom Pedano of Jacksonville (lead), and John Rasco of Tyler (baritone) will be singing in these shows.

GOSPEL IN ATHENS

ATHENS - Southern Gospel group Heirline is scheduled to be in concert beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Texas Gospel Music Hall, located at 6513 Texas Highway 19 South in Athens, officials announced.

Also on the bill will be Jericho Road Quartet.
