Suspect in Alleged Jacksonville Rape Identified
By KELLY PREW
Staff Writer

RUSK— The suspect of an alleged rape at Jacksonville High School that allegedly happened in early January has been identified, JISD Police Chief Marvin Acker told the Tyler Paper today.

Michael Lawrence Watkins, 17, of Jacksonville, was released from the Cherokee County Jail on a $15,000 bond Monday after his arrest earlier the same day. He is charged with sexual assault.

Superintendent Stuart Bird said in a written statement Jan. 10 the school had turned the case over to the district attorney’s office after the initial investigation.
Bird said the district’s investigation produced evidence an incident did happen after hours in a stairwell near the high school gymnasium on Jan. 7.

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Patton-Rogers is the lead prosecutor in the case. She refused to disclose details of the case until after a formal arraignment, which is expected in early April.

Watkins was indicted Feb. 25.
