Joyce and Ken Roddy (from left) and Roberto Anchondo on Wizard are preparing for “Cookin’ Up Homes For Habitat” fundraiser, to be held April 5 at the ranch.
Joyce and Ken Roddy, along with Roberto Anchondo, sitting on quarterhorse Wizard, will throw open their iron gates and welcome guests to “Cookin’ Up Homes for Habitat,” to be held at 7 p.m. April 5 at the Roddy Ranch, event spokesperson LaVerne Gollob said.

Western cuisine will be prepared by Celebrity Chef Tim Love. Major sponsors are Suddenlink, Brookshire’s and The Learning Channel.

“Two hundred and fifty guests will feast on a fabulous meal prepared by Chef Love, while enjoying the breath taking scenery provided at Roddy Ranch,” Mrs. Gollob said. “This spacious, beautiful 220-acre thoroughbred horse ranch is the ‘perfect’ setting for ‘Lonesome Dove’ theme of this year’s fourth annual fundraiser for Habitat.”

The Roddys grew up in this area, and, after spending 44 years in New Mexico, they sold their business and moved to the ranch.

“Joyce and Ken feel it a privilege to play host for Habitat’s fundraiser this year,” Mrs. Gollob said.

The ranch is located on Texas Highway 31 east, nine miles from Loop 323. Their Web site is www.roddyranchtyler.com.

Love is an Iron Chef America winner and a James Beard nominee. He is known for being a pioneer of Western cuisine and prefers to wear a cowboy hat when he cooks. He owns The Lonesome Dove Western Bistro, Duce, The Love Shack and the White Elephant Saloon in Fort Worth.

Tour of the lovely Ranch House shall be available, along with a Sponsorship Reception at 6:00 p.m. It isn’t too late to sign up as a sponsor and take advantage of this special opportunity.

“Cookin’ up Homes” is a major Habitat fundraising event. Proceeds will help build a Habitat home in Smith County and give a low income family a chance to realize the American dream of home ownership. Habitat builds qualify, affordable housing that offers dignity and pride, encourages family stability, educational achievement and responsible citizenship.

Dora Benavidez is serving as chair of this “Lonesome Dove” Gala, along with her committee of Denise Acosta, Susana Benavidez, Jeanette Calhoun, Patricia Canfield, Renna Embry, Annette Findley, Maxine Flatt, Candice Gast, LaVerne Gollob, Randy Goad, Judith Guthrie, Laura Hyde, Joanne Idell, Amy McCullough, Sonia Mumtaz, Elaine Osburn, Chris & George Ann Reed, Pam Schrock, Zoe Kerr and Habitat Staff member Brenda Whiteley.
