Arps served as a "Buffalo Soldier" in the 371 Infantry of the 92nd Division and spent nearly three years in the European Theater of operations, he said.
"I was part of the group that marched into Berlin, hoping we could catch Hitler," he said. "We didn't, but we tried." No matter how bad can get today, he said, it pays to think positively.
"We still have the Lord over us, and living in the United States as a free man, can't be beat."
After 26 years as a pastor, Arps said he has reflected on all that's happened, and has grown in faith.
"I have more faith now than when I started, and in the man who kept me there, Jesus Christ," he said. "I'm just amazed that God had the patience to change an infidel like me. It gets better every day. My Lord just keeps blessing me."
And his advice to others?
"Keep trusting that he will work and think positive," Arps said. "It will get better every day."
