Tyler Pounds Named FAA's Texas Regional Airport of the Year
Tyler Pounds Regional Airport was named Texas' regional Airport of the Year today by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA honored seven airports during the annual regional airports partnership conference held in Dallas. The region includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
In each of the five states, the FAA named a 2007 Airport of the Year to recognize outstanding contributions airports make to aviation in their state. Year 2007 outstanding airports, along with Pounds, are: Waldron Municipal Airport, Waldron, Ark.; Southland Field Airport, Sulphur, La.; Clovis Municipal Airport, Clovis, N.M.; and Bartlesville Municipal Airport, Bartlesville, Okla.
Two other special awards focus on aviation safety and construction safety.
The Airport Safety Award for 2007 went to the San Angelo Regional Airport/Mathis Field, San Angelo, Texas. The award recognizes one airport in the region for outstanding contribution and commitment to aviation safety. San Angelo Regional’s support of aviation safety initiatives significantly contributed to assuring the efficiency of safe travel.
The region’s new Excellence in Construction Safety Award went to El Paso International Airport. The award recognizes 2007 efforts that promote, improve and enhance operational safety on active airfields during periods of construction or repairs.
Kelvin L. Solco, FAA’s Southwest Region Airports Division manager made the presentations. Solco’s staff inspects and certifies airports and administers federal airport development grants.
Teri A. Bruner, FAA Southwest Region administrator, noted that “these airports have contributed significantly to assuring the future growth, safety, and efficiency of the national air transportation system.” Bruner drew attention to FAA’s emphasis on airport on-ground movement safety, and on growth at the region’s airports reflected in a new award for airport construction safety.
