ETSOA Board Honors Bain For Her Service

The East Texas Symphony Orchestra Association Board has honored Carolyn Halbrooks Bain for more than 45 years of service with the East Texas Symphony and its sister organization, Women's Symphony League.
Recipient of the 2008 ETSOA's Past President Award recognizing extraordinary contributions and volunteer service for symphony activities, Ms. Bain received the award at a reception following the Masterworks IV Concert in late February, ETSOA spokesperson Betty Bower said.
Held in the home of James D. Bozman and Russell T. Scott, the reception was hosted by the East Texas Symphony Foundation Board. Special guests included N.A.S.A. Astronaut Commander Lee Morin, narrator of the evening's Holst's Planets multi-media concert, well-known movie score composer Will Jennings, and pianist Kay Williams.
Ms. Bain served as president of the ETSOA Board in 1989-90, and as WSL president in 1975-76. Initially involved in symphony activities through her first husband, the late Norman Halbrooks, who was ETSOA president in 1964-65, she has continued volunteer work throughout the years in various committees.
Elected as an ETSOA board member in 1975, Ms. Bain has held positions as ticket sales chair, Harmony Inns and Invitations chair, and co-chaired the Family Concert in 2007. Through her board membership in both ETSOA and WSL, Ms. Bain, now the wife of David Bain, who also supports her music interests, actively brings newcomers to Tyler to various symphony events to welcome them to the community, Mrs. Bower said.
Within the East Texas area, Ms. Bain is the 2008 president of the Women's Council of Realtors. Honored as Realtor of the Year in 2002, she is an active member of the Greater Association of Realtors, Texas Realtors Association and National Association of Realtors.
An R.N. graduate of the University of Texas, Galveston, she then earned the BSN at The University of Texas at Tyler. A member of Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Nursing Sorority and Alpha Chi Honorary Society, UT Tyler, Ms. Bain is past president of the UTMB School of Nursing Alumni Association, and a past board member of the UTT Alumni Association, Mrs. Bower said.
As wife of the late Dr. Norman Halbrooks and a member of the Smith County Medical Alliance, she chaired its major fundraiser, Book Fair.
A member of American Association of University Women, she has served as co-chair of its major winter fundraiser, the Holiday in the Pines Home Tour.
A member of First Baptist Church, Tyler, she has served as president of the Woman's Missionary Union, and as a pre-school teacher in Mission Friends at the church.
