ATHENS - By a more than 23.4 percent margin, attorney Scott McKee unseated longtime Henderson County District Attorney Donna Bennett in Tuesday's Republican Primary.

With all precincts reporting and a total of 9,230 votes, McKee won with 61.7 percent, or 5,699 votes. Bennett had 38.3 percent, or 3,531 votes.

There is no Democratic candidate.

Earlier in the night, McKee would not comment to the win, wanting to wait for the final results.

Ms. Bennett also was not immediately available for comment.

McKee ran on a platform of experience in leadership, citing his service in the Army. He has also drawn a hard line against drug manufacturers and dealers and child abusers.

McKee told the Tyler Paper he'll bring tougher charges on criminals, and he'll do it his way.

"That doesn't mean I won't have to explain myself to the people of the county," he said.

Ms. Bennett argued she's already laid the groundwork for harsher punishments for those kinds of criminals, but that wasn't enough for Henderson County voters in this election.

"(Bennett) and I are different because I have leadership," McKee told the Tyler Paper in an earlier interview. "As far as leadership goes, my experience far surpasses hers. I'm different because I'm the leader. I'm the warrior, and I want to fight for Henderson County. I'm not just a lawyer."

McKee will assume the role of district attorney in January 2009.
