East Texas Navy League Council Formed in Tyler
The Navy League of the United States (NLUS) chartered its 250th Council in Tyler last month. The organization has over 60,000 members worldwide of “Citizens in Support of the Sea Services."

National president Mike McGrath and regional president “Bull” Walker of the Corpus Christi area officiated at the inauguration of the East Texas Council of the Navy League on Jan. 10 at the Traditions restaurant in Tyler.

Numerous area citizens were in attendance and elected council officers; President Randy Vanderstay from Jacksonville, Vice President Jo Anne Fleming from Flint, Vice President Robert Yakel from Fate, Vice President Bill Fiser and Treasurer Connie Fiser, both of Flint.

Retired Commander Nicholas D. Ricco from Dallas, who is also the North Texas Area president, will coordinate council activities and provide training and support for the East Texas Council.

Yakel and Mr. and Mrs. Fiser announced the adoption of the sea cadet Battalion of the Navy sea cadet corps in which they all serve as training officers of that age 10-17 youth group. These cadets provided the honor and color guard for this inaugural ceremony, as well as for many county and city ceremonies during 2007. They received military style training around the United States and overseas.

Contact Mrs. Fiser at 903-520-3109 for information about enrolling your children.

Mrs. Fleming will serve as media and community relations liaison for the East Texas Council of the Navy League and help coordinate activities for all service organizations. Additionally, she is planning activities for inter-service civilian and veteran groups to better serve Smith County and its citizens. Mrs. Fleming stresses that no former Navy or military service is required to be a member of the Navy League or serve as a Sea Cadet training officer or escort.

The Navy league was formed in 1902 by President Teddy Roosevelt who believed that the U.S. Navy was lagging in sea power compared to the other world powers and that it needed civilian advocates who could help promote a strong Navy which would project the strength of the United States in world commerce and activities.

The Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston councils of the Navy League have numerous members living in East Texas who may wish to transfer to the East Texas Council by calling President Randy Vanderstay at 903-721-1881. For more information about the council and an application to join, call President Vanderstay and/or go on line to www.NavyLeague.org.
