Magourik, Wylie To Be Enshrined
Phil Hicks
Two football players who thrilled many East Texas fans have been selected for induction into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.

Conrad "Connie" Magouirk, who starred at London High School, and Joe Wylie, who was a standout at Henderson High School, are part of the 2008 Class.

Magouirk represents the pre-1949 players, while Wylie represents 1960s.

Other members of the class include: Johnny Treadwell of Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin (1950s); Johnny "Lam" Jones of Lampasas High School (1970s); Nati Valdez of Mission High School (1980s); Branndon Stewart of Stephenville High School (1990s); Art Briles of Stephenville High School (Coach); and sports writer Robert R. Cessna of the Bryan-College Station Eagle (special contributor to Texas High School football).

The induction ceremony banquet is scheduled for May 3 at Baylor University's Ferrell Center in Waco.

Magouirk, who was a Sporting News High School All-American in 1948, played at London High School in New London. The school is now known as West Rusk High School.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound fullback, who resides in Baytown, was known as "Big Connie" and "Madman Magouirk" for his bruising running style.

In 1948, he led the London Wildcats to a 13-1 record, scoring 33 touchdowns and rushing for more than 2,000 yards.

Magouirk was nominated by John "Bubba" Kelley, a 2006 inductee from Mineola.

At Texas A&M from 1950-53, Magouirk lettered three years and was voted the team's best blocking back.

Wylie had 5,804 yards in his three-year varsity career at Henderson, earning him all-state honors in 1967 and 1968. He had 2,812 yards his senior season, with 1,840 yards rushing.

He was also a standout punt returner.

Wylie played at Oklahoma from 1970-73 where he was a halfback in the wishbone alongside Greg Pruitt behind quarterback Jack Mildren.

Wylie was later a fourth-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders.

Other inductees:

Treadwell played guard and linebacker for the SFA Maroons in the late 1950s before becoming an icon with the University of Texas, where he was included on the school's all-time team.

Jones helped the United States' 4x100 meter relay team win gold at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He later played at Texas and was the No. 2 overall pick by the New York Jets in the 1980 draft. At Lampasas he earned all-state football honors in 1975, but was best known for his 43.8-second anchor leg as a senior in the 4x400-meter relay at the state track meet, lifting Lampasas from last place to first.

Valdez was a record-setting wide receiver from 1986-88, catching 252 passes for 3,726 yards.

Stewart was a consensus All-American at Stephenville where he accounted for 4,074 yards and 47 TDs his senior year in leading the Yellow Jackets to a 16-0 record and the 1993 Class 4A state title. After transferring from Tennessee to Texas A&M, Stewart led the Aggies to a 36-33 double-overtime win over Kansas State for the 1998 Big 12 Championship.

Briles, who is now the head coach at Baylor after a successful stint at Houston, won four state championships in his 12 years at Stephenville, including back-to-back titles in 1998-99.

Cessna started work at The Eagle part-time in 1974, and became a full-time employee a few months later. He was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' High School writer of the year for 1981-82, and the Texas High School Coaches Association's sports writer of the year in 1996-97. He was been involved with the Texas Sports Writers Association's all-state football teams for approximately three decades.

NOTES: The banquet begins at 6 p.m. on May 3 at the Ferrell Center with tickets $30 for adults and $10 for students. To order tickets contact Tiffany Wilkins at 254-829-1556. ... The banquet will also include presentations to the 2007 state football championship coaches as well as the Tom Landry Award (outstanding coach) and Gordon Wood Award (outstanding high school). ...
