ARP — Authorities are looking at surveillance tape and video from an Arp City Marshal's police cruiser in hopes of identifying arson suspects wanted for questioning in two fires set just hours apart.
Marilynn Wilson, Smith County assistant fire marshal, said she was notified of the first blaze about 11:30 Wednesday night.
“We had a small house that was burned at the corner of Cook and Philip streets in downtown Arp last night (Wednesday),” she said.
Wilson said the home was a loss and is ruled arson.
“This fire was deliberately set and we think we have a couple of suspects on tape,” she said.
Wilson explained that a city marshal was patrolling the area and saw two men in the vicinity of the fire.
“He remembered seeing two guys walking the streets about 20 minutes prior to the house fire so we’re are pulling the tapes to see if we can identify the men,” she said.
Wilson said the owner said the home was financed for $10,000 and it was not clear if it was insured.
Firefighters from Arp, Troup and Chapel Hill all responded to the fire and had it under control within a couple of hours.
But firefighters would not rest long before they were called to another fire about a block away.
“We had another call come in about 4 a.m. that we had a cane field on fire and we had about two acres burn before we got it under control,” she said.
Wilson said that fire was believed to be arson as well because it started right in the middle of the field.
