PARADE Magazine Honors Calhoun
NEW YORK - Nine Texans, including Van running back Jermie Calhoun, have been named to PARADE's 45th annual All-America High School Football Team, the magazine announced Monday.
Calhoun is among 58 players from 24 states to make the team, which will be listed in Sunday's issue, which appears in the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph.
Calhoun, an All-East Texas first-teamer who has committed to Oklahoma, rushed for 1,908 yards and scored 30 touchdowns in 10 games. He also threw for 804 yards and four touchdowns.
Other Texans on the team and their college commitments are: Lamar Consolidated running back Jacquizz Rodgers (Oregon State); San Antonio Reagan running back Marcus Wright (Tulsa), Katy running back Aundre Dean (UCLA), Keller Fossil Ridge lineman R.J. Washington (Oklahoma), Klein lineman J.B. Shugarts (Ohio State), Nederland linebacker Dravannti Johnson (Texas), Round Rock McNeil defensive back Aaron Williams (Texas), and Southlake Carroll quarterback/all-purpose Riley Dodge (North Texas).
Founded in 1963, PARADE's All-America High School Football Team has a legacy of recognizing outstanding athletes who have gone on to star on college and professional football fields.
Thirteen PARADE All-Americans have won the Heisman Trophy, including Tyler's own Earl Campbell. Other Heisman winners are: Tim Tebow, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Ron Dayne, Herschel Walker, Charles Woodson, Rashaan Salaam, Marcus Allen, Billy Sims, and Tony Dorsett.
The 2007-2008 NFL boasts 156 PARADE All-Americans, including Peyton Manning, Vince Young and Palestine's Adrian Peterson, to name just a few. Other recognizable PARADE All-Americans include Emmitt Smith, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, John Elway, and Donovan McNabb.
Before vying for Super Bowl stardom this Sunday, the following Giants and Patriots players were named PARADE All-Americans - from New England: Kyle Brady, Kevin Faulk, Randy Moss and Junior Seau and from New York: Plaxico Burress, Michael Johnson (a former Tyler Junior College standout) and R.W. McQuarters.
