Lee Still Shooting For First District Win
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer

Robert E. Lee basketball is on a mission to break through in district play.

The Lady Raiders are 0-4 and Red Raiders are 0-3 thus far, but look to get on a winning track Friday against North Mesquite.

The Lee boys will be at home against North Mesquite at REL Varsity Gymnasium while the girls are on the road against the Lady Stallions at North Mesquite High School. Both games are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Red Raiders haven't played for seven days, time to reflect after a tough loss on the road at Longview. Lee fell 54-45 last Friday, committing 29 turnovers. REL's free-throw struggles hurt also with the Red Raiders making 9 of 24.

Lee is shooting 57.7 percent from the line on the season.

A bright spot in last Friday's game, according to head coach Alan Johnston, was the play of Anmon Weaver. In his first varsity game up from the JV, Weaver finished with five points and eight rebounds.

"We are excited about young players like Anmon (Weaver) coming up," Johnston said. "Our team has been suffering from the flu.

"I thought that our workouts this week have been a lot better.

North Mesquite (1-1) defeated Longview in its first game and was stopped by Mesquite 52-45 last Friday. REL trails the Stallions by one game in the district standings.

"I told our team this week that we are at the crossroads of our season," Johnston said. "This is a huge, huge game."

Lee Girls Face Midway
Robert E. Lee girls soccer entertains Waco Midway at 8 p.m. Friday at TJC's Pat Hartley Soccer Complex.

The Lady Raiders (2-1-1) have enjoyed a six-day break since a strong showing at the Red Bull/Nike Showcase and now face Midway, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A Region II.

Lee scored eight goals in its four matches last weekend, highlighted by a 4-1 win over Bishop Lynch in the finale.

Three players are currently tied for the team scoring lead with Kendall Frizzell, Traci Lee and Ashley Jones all with two goals each.

BOYS
The Red Raiders (3-1-1) begin play at the Longview Tournament Friday against Magnolia and Thomas Jefferson. Lee faces Magnolia at 1 p.m. before matching up with Thomas Jefferson at 5 p.m.

Lee is coming off a 4-0 win Tuesday against Lindale. Abdiel Palomo, who leads REL with three goals thus far, gave the Red Raiders a lead they didn't relinquish.
