Tylerites Shine Light On City With Character, Performance
Tyler gains national attention from time to time, not always in a positive light, but the city got highly favorable recognition in televised coverage of the college football Bowl Championship Series national title game in New Orleans.
Not one, but two young Tyler products played key roles in the Louisiana State University football team's 38-24 victory over Ohio State that gave the Tigers college football's title of national champions. Both players several times drew mention for their play during the game and their home town was often noted.
Matt Flynn, a senior, and Ciron Black, a sophomore, both played high school football at Tyler's Robert E. Lee High School before going to LSU where Flynn is the starting quarterback and Black is a starter at offensive tackle. They also are recognized as outstanding individuals with qualities that make them role models for today's young.
Adding additional glitter to the Tyler showing was Flynn's outstanding game performance in throwing four touchdown passes for the Tigers and being named the Most Valuable Player of the championship game.
In addition to being a leader in the LSU offensive line, Black got favorable recognition for dedicating his BCS title win to a 7-year-old leukemia patient in Baton Rouge and wearing a wrist band with the youngster's name on it. He also had a reputation as a serious student at Lee and at LSU last year was on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
Flynn and Black stood out as key players on a national championship team earning praise and honors for their performances. A lot of others also were able to bask in the spotlight of their accomplishments, including their families, high school and all citizens of Tyler, their home town. Well done, guys.
