A new address for a venerable East Texas arts institution and a couple of notable anniversaries were announced during the past 12 months as the arts and entertainment scene in East Texas underwent changes in many areas.

In late September, officials with the Tyler Museum of Art, practically bursting at the seams at their familiar location on Mahon Avenue on the Tyler Junior College campus, announced land had been purchased on the corner of University Drive and Lazy Creek Drive for the eventual relocation of the museum.

Meanwhile, in the current location, "James McNeill Whistler: Selected Works from the Hunterian Art Gallery'' was unveiled in the first week of February. Organized by International Arts & Artists of Washington, D.C., the exhibition brought pieces from the famed artist's estate to the U.S. for the first time, including paintings, prints, watercolors, manuscripts and personal belongings such as silverware and porcelain.

The Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007 by welcoming Clint Black in September, Lyle Lovett in October and the Irish Tenors in December.

A familiar and popular music event - Festival on the Square - marked its 20th birthday with music and fun on the downtown square in Tyler in September. Headlining the event was Charlie Robison and Stoney Larue.

Other entertainment highlights for 2007 across East Texas included:

  • In May, the Tyler art and music world "reached out" to the Hispanic community and honored its culturally rich population.

TMA showcased "Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico" exhibition, which consisted of selections from the Laura B. and Daniel D. Boeckman collection.

Later in 2007, TMA announced the exhibit along with other works from the Beockman collection would be added to their permanent collection- piling on more reasons their relocation became necessary.

  • ETSO welcomed Mariachi Champana Nevin at the R. Don Cowan Fine & Performing Arts Center.

The celebration of Hispanic heritage featured the debut of "Pasion Mexicana," a full-length concerto for mariachi and orchestra.

  • In September, ETSO launched its 64th Masterworks Season, staging the first of five concerts with acclaimed 14-year-old pianist Peng Peng.

Later in the year, ETSO offered East Texans a chance to experience the music of award-winning 19-year-old violinist Caitlin Tully, and invited families to enjoy the magic of "The Polar Express" during its annual family concert.

  • The University of Texas at Tyler's Cowan Center celebrated its 10-year anniversary in August.

The venue's objective is to offer East Texans an opportunity to experience Tony award-winning Broadway shows and nationally acclaimed artists closer to home. The season was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ben Fisch, a longtime Cowan Center supporter and advisory board member, devoted to UT Tyler, Cowan and the community.

So far this season, they have welcomed country music sensation Clint Black, Texas native Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, The Best of Momix, The Irish Tenors, the 1962 Broadway remake of "Hairspray" and 10 violinists in "Bowfire."

  • Tyler's Festival on the Square celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2007.

The entertainment was themed with Texas country music featuring headliners Charlie Robison and Stoney Larue.

  • Singer/songwriter and Lindale native Miranda Lambert had a monster of a year in 2007.

During the year, Ms. Lambert was named "Best New Female Vocalist" at the Academy of Country Music Awards, released her sophomore album "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," and was nominated at the Country Music Association for "Female Vocalist of the Year."

Ms. Lambert's album reached the top spot on country Billboard charts and sold nearly 53,000 copies in its first week.

  • The Rogers Children's Theatre players of the Tyler Civic Theatre boarded a jet for Jolly Olde England on July 31 to present excerpts from "The Miracle Worker,'' "To Kill a Mockingbird,'' "The Mark Twain Story'' and "Once On This Island.''

Chosen by competitive tryouts, the London Troupe was composed of 10 seasoned young players in the TCT's productions and educational programs. The group traveled with directors DeAnna Hargrove and Felicity Enas, who is from England. While in England, they performed on a London stage, enjoyed productions and learned from British experts about various phases of stagecraft. In addition, they took excursions to points of interest for all who love theater, such as Stratford on Avon, Covent Garden, the Globe Theatre and others.

  • On Jan. 13, Hal Holbrook brought his world-renowned one-man play "Mark Twain Tonight" to the University of Texas at Tyler's Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. Holbrook's performance as the American sage has garnered the veteran actor a Tony Award.
