Vickery To Run Against Cook
By ROY MAYNARD

Frost businessman and Tyler native Bobby Vickery will seek to unseat state Rep. Byron Cook in the March Republican primary.
House District 8 includes Anderson, Freestone, Limestone and Navarro counties.
Vickery, a sales representative and environmental manager for Republican Services, is running as a fiscal conservative.
"When I look at the waste in the budget, and the invasive presence of government in our daily lives, I can't help but want to put a stop to it," Vickery said in his announcement. "If elected, I promise to return our great state to the traditional conservative values of smaller government, lower taxes, family values, and stronger security."
Cook, a three-term House member from Corsicana, challenged House Speaker Tom Craddick in the closing days of the most recent legislative session. A recent attorney general's opinion went against Cook and his contention that a speaker can be removed with a floor vote.
"I realized a year ago that we just aren't getting the response we need and the results we expect from the current crop of politicians down in Austin," Vickery said. "I am running for state representative because I understand the day-to-day lives of the hard-working people of the district. I know I can make their life better by fighting against government waste and by being responsive to the people of District 8."
Vickery was born in Tyler, then moved with his family to Frankston. He graduated as valedictorian of Neches High School. After attending Stephen F. Austin State University, Vickery started an air-conditioning business with his brother. In 1994, he moved to Frost in Navarro County to work for Republic Services.
"I'm not a millionaire; I work for a living," Vickery said. "I have been traveling around the district for years, talking to people day in and day out. They tell me over and over again that they wish their representative would help them with this problem or that. And it's a shame that they don't get the help they need. I'm running to make a difference."
Vickery has served as a trustee for the Frost Independent School District.
His wife, Milly, is a teacher and tennis coach for Frost ISD. They have two children. They are members of Frost United Methodist Church.
