Winona VFD Receives $72,000 Grant
WINONA - The Winona Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $72,200 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Grants and Training, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Wednesday.

"This funding will help make sure first responders at the Winona Volunteer Fire Department have the resources necessary to keep the surrounding community safe," Cornyn said.

Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Brock said the department will use the funds to buy 25 sets of new bunker gear for all of its members to replace gear that is 11 years old.

The department will also purchase a compressor to be used in filling air tanks that firefighters use on structure fires, Brock said. Some funds will also be spent on purchase of a trailer that will enable firefighters to refill bottles on the scene and not run out, Brock added.
