Hawkins Students Get Day Off Because Of Gas Leak

HAWKINS - Students at Hawkins Independent School District will have a brief break from the books Tuesday as maintenance workers repair a natural gas line on campus.

A Hawkins ISD staff member walking near the elementary school's cafeteria entrance at around 3 p.m. noticed an odor of gas and contacted maintenance.

"They did some investigation around the gas meter and found the source of the smell," Hawkins ISD Superintendent Dan Rose said.

The source was a small leak in a main natural gas line that feeds the entire elementary building.

The leak was capped and is no longer a danger, Rose said.

Crews from the school's natural gas provider are scheduled to fix the pipe sometime Tuesday morning.

"We are hoping to have school started back on Wednesday, but we will have to see how it goes," he said.

Students were already getting onto busses to go home at the end of the day when the leak was reported.

"We went ahead with a normal end of school day," Rose said.

While the elementary building was the only one affected by the leak, administration decided to cancel classes Tuesday for the entire district. The elementary school shares a campus with the middle and high school.

"We could have class for the middle and high school, but only half of our students would be there," Rose said.

Rose added that because it was one of the main lines that was broken, the elementary school would not have any heat or way to cook meals in the cafeteria.

The missed day will count as a "bad weather day," and the students will have to make it up at the end of the year.
