TJC Apaches Sweep Bearcats
By JOE BUIE

JACKSONVILLE - The streaking Tyler Junior College Apaches got a rare win Wednesday night at Vivian and Bob Smith Gymnasium.

The fact that it was a blowout in TJC's first road game of the year was unexpected as the Apaches beat Lon Morris, 84-65, in the nightcap of a Region XIV basketball doubleheader.

"The margin was a surprise to us," said TJC head coach Mike Marquis. "When you look at their statistics, they shoot the ball so well and I thought we'd have some trouble."

In the opener, the No. 8 Apache Ladies played from behind much of the night before winning 79-72 in overtime.

MEN

The combination of Joseph Fulce and Jimmy Butler continued to fill up the stat sheet and lead the Apaches to an unbeaten start (8-0, 2-0).

Fulce, a 6-6 freshman who has signed with Marquette, had 21 points and 11 rebounds while the 6-6 Butler, another freshman, had 20 points and seven rebounds. Butler, who plays the three position, even moved out to point guard when the Apaches started turning the ball over against the Lon Morris press.

The Apaches won despite 28 turnovers - 17 in the second half that allowed the Bearcats to cut a 20-point deficit to nine with 10 minutes to play.

After Lon Morris (7-3, 0-2) missed two shots to get closer, the Apaches went on an 11-2 run to double their lead at 18 points, 73-55, with six minutes left.

The Apaches dominated on the glass - 51 rebounds to 33 for Lon Morris - and won the shooting battle, 48.5 percent to 32.4.

"I'm pleased with the way we defended," Marquis said. "In the first half, especially, we rebounded well and the depth and versatility of our team showed.

"The down part is in both second halves (in conference) we've gotten big leads and people have pressed us and we didn't handle it well. But Jimmy Butler saved our team the way he handled the ball. He made a couple of big baskets and his presence calmed us down."

Marquis also noted the defense of Karnack's Malcolm Thomas and John Tyler's Reggie Nelson at the top of the 2-3 zone.

Jamie Vanderbeken was also a key to the victory. The 6-10 sophomore from Canada contributed 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and led the team with 13 rebounds.

The only time Lon Morris led was 3-2. The Apaches took the lead for good at 13-11 on an inside bucket from Fulce.

In other men's action, Paris topped Angelina 86-71, Navarro beat Blinn 81-62, Kilgore won over Lee 73-64, San Jacinto beat Trinity Valley 77-68, and Panola downed Jacksonville 84-74.

WOMEN

The Lady Bearcats (7-3, 1-1) missed a shot to open the overtime and committed an offensive foul on their next possession.

TJC, meanwhile, converted on its first two possessions with Brittany Toran feeding the ball inside to Jasmine King for four quick points. King scored six points in the extra session and 19 for the game to go with 11 rebounds as TJC controlled the five-minute OT.

The Apache Ladies literally stole this game, picking off Lon Morris 13 times out of the 23 turnovers for the home team.

"We had to do something to slow them down," said TJC head coach Trenia Tillis-Jones. "They were one of those teams that never stopped moving. Our kids started reading that they were able to (steal the ball). We had to take chances. At first we were playing timid but we started going for the basketball."

The Apache Ladies finished the first semester on a high note by improving to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

TJC had to overcome adversity and a loud crowd as the Apache Ladies fell behind 52-42 with 10:53 left in the game.

But down the stretch, TJC picked up key steals and got solid production from freshman point guard Kelly Stewart to take a 66-62 lead with 2:31 to play in regulation.

Stewart had a chance to give TJC a last-second win, but missed on a scoop shot. She finished with 14 points. Sophomore Yoshica Spears contributed 16 points.

"Kelly is a major scoring threat and I thought in the first half (freshman point guard) Brittany Roberson showed how to play defense on their guards," Tillis-Jones said.
