Cherokee County DA To Seek Third Term In 2008
From Staff Reports

RUSK - Cherokee County District Attorney Elmer Beckworth announced plans to seek a third term of office in 2008.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to serve the county for another four years," Beckworth said on Tuesday.

He was first elected District Attorney in 2000, after more than 20 years of service as an assistant district attorney for Cherokee County. Beckworth said he plans to be on the ballot for the Democratic primary in March. So far, he's the only person to announce plans to seek that office.

"I stand on my record of service," he said in a prepared statement. "I will continue to work hard to make our county a safer place for every family."

He added that over the past eight years, the district attorney's office has successfully prosecuted criminal cases involving drug abuse, theft, robbery and capital murder.

"I believe that experience is a very important advantage for our county when it comes to prosecuting criminals," Beckworth said.

Beckworth graduated with an undergraduate degree from The University of Texas in 1976, and earned his law degree there in 1978.

He said that in 2005, he began legislation to amend the Texas Constitution to allow state judges more discretion in denying bail to people who violate the terms of their bail. He also said he worked with other prosecutors to pass tougher child molestation laws earlier this year.

Beckworth serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Prison Prosecution Union, the Cherokee County Crisis Center and the Texas District and County Attorneys Association. He is married to Janice Beckworth, and they have two children, Erin and Margaret.
